Rubin Observatory team members joined scientists, students, and astronomy enthusiasts at a recent meeting in New Orleans
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) held its annual winter meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 7-11, and Rubin Observatory sent an enthusiastic group of staff members and scientists to participate. Overall, the meeting drew more than 3000 in-person attendees, and the agenda was packed each day from morning until night with inspiring speakers, science presentations, press conferences, workshops, and more.
Rubin Observatory hosted an exhibit booth throughout the week, where attendees interacted with Rubin staff members and scientists. Many also participated in Rubin’s “Space Surveyors” contest; playing the interactive, online game to be entered in a daily random drawing or competing more seriously for the overall top score prize. Daily winners went home with limited-edition Rubin water bottles, and the top score prizes (there was a 2-way tie!) were 1000-piece Rubin jigsaw puzzles.
On January 8th, Rubin Observatory’s formal education team facilitated an interactive session to introduce educators to the suite of online investigations offered by Rubin. The newly revised “Coloring the Universe” investigation was the main focus of the three-hour session, which was attended by about 25 high school and college instructors, as well as informal educators and outreach specialists.
People eager to use Rubin data for science were encouraged to attend a special session early in the week called Early Science with Rubin, which featured several talks about when and how certain data will be made available before the start of Rubin’s 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
Rubin also hosted a Town Hall on Thursday, January 11th—an informative event with presentations covering subjects such as Rubin’s recent construction achievements and upcoming activities, education and outreach initiatives, developments in the Rubin science community, and ways to get involved with Rubin.
Despite their busy schedules, many of the out-of-town meeting attendees found time to sample local New Orleans cuisine, and take in some of the live music for which the city is known. You can see photos taken throughout the week in our Gallery.

La Sociedad Astronómica Americana (AAS por sus siglas en inglés) realizó su reunión anual de invierno del 7 al 11 de enero en Nueva Orleans, Louisiana, donde el Observatorio Rubin envió a un entusiasta grupo de miembros del personal y científicos a participar en la conferencia. En general, la reunión convocó a más de 3.000 asistentes presenciales, cuya agenda estuvo repleta cada día (desde la mañana hasta la noche) con inspiradores ponentes, presentaciones de ciencia, conferencias de prensa, talleres, y muchas otras actividades.
A lo largo de la semana, el Observatorio Rubin atendió un stand de exhibición, donde los asistentes interactuaron con miembros del personal y científicos de Rubin. Muchos participaron también en el concurso Space Surveyors de Rubin; un juego interactivo en línea para participar en un sorteo diario o competir por el premio al puntaje más alto. Los ganadores del sorteo diario se llevaron botellas de agua Rubin edición limitada, y para los ganadores de los puntajes más altos (¡hubo un empate!), se entregaron rompecabezas de Rubin de 1.000 piezas.
El 8 de enero, el equipo de educación formal del Observatorio Rubin organizó una sesión interactiva para presentar a los educadores el conjunto de investigaciones en línea que ofrece Rubin. La nueva investigación (actualizada) “Coloreando el Universo” fue el tema principal de la sesión de tres horas, donde participaron cerca de 25 instructores de secundarias y universidades, así como educadores informales y especialistas de divulgación.
Se invitó a las personas interesadas en utilizar los datos de Rubin para fines científicos a participar en una sesión especial a inicios de la semana llamada Early Science with Rubin, que incluyó varias charlas sobre cuándo y cómo se pondrán a disposición ciertos datos antes del comienzo de la Investigación del Espacio-Tiempo como Legado para la posteridad (LSST por sus siglas en inglés) de Rubin, que tendrá una duración de diez años.
El jueves 11 de enero, Rubin también organizó una Asamblea General: un evento informativo que incluyó presentaciones sobre temas como los logros recientes de la construcción de Rubin y las próximas actividades, iniciativas de educación y difusión, avances en la comunidad científica de Rubin, y formas para ser parte de Rubin.

Financial support for Rubin Observatory comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Cooperative Support Agreement No. 1202910, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under Contract No. DE-AC02-76SF00515, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation. The NSF-funded Rubin Observatory Project Office for construction was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The DOE-funded effort to build the the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera (LSSTCam) is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC).

independent federal agency created by Congress
in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
NSF and DOE will continue to support Rubin Observatory in its Operations phase. They will also provide support for scientific research with LSST data.
