July 29, 2016 - This model is our first attempt at using the measurements taken on site in February 2016 with a DJI phantom 3 pro drone to create a 3D map of the LSST summit construction on Cerro Pachón (Chile). This is a first step towards capturing the progress of the construction in 3D. The drone is programmed to fly prescribed circuits around the summit to cover the site at different angles. The time required to complete a circuit is variable between 15 and 30min depending on the area to cover and the battery lifetime. This initial map was created from a series of multiple flights over a period of one week. The drone imagery was then processed to create this interactive 3D model. We expect to continue this process after recording more recent data to document the ongoing construction. The goal is to create a 3D model of the as built construction site that can be used during operations.
Financial support for Rubin Observatory comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Cooperative Support Agreement No. 1202910, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under Contract No. DE-AC02-76SF00515, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation. The NSF-funded Rubin Observatory Project Office for construction was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The DOE-funded effort to build the the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera (LSSTCam) is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC).

in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
NSF and DOE will continue to support Rubin Observatory in its Operations phase. They will also provide support for scientific research with LSST data.
