Auxiliary Telescope - Introduction, Imaging, Spectroscopy, and early systems Engineering.
Thursday Aug 10, 2-3:30 pm project time (CA time zone, also AZ)
The Auxiliary Telescope ("Aux Tel') has been in operation, typically for a few nights per month, for quite some time. Its primary mission during operations will be the determination of the variable components of the optical transmission of the atmosphere, especially aerosols and water vapor. But it also provides an opportunity for early system integration and commissioning. The Aux Tel system allows for the development of image quality diagnostics, The imaging data provides an opportunity to refine and validate instrument signature removal methods, including for example crosstalk and non-linearity corrections. The session will begin with an introduction to the Aux Tel system, and all are welcome to come and learn about the status and upcoming plans for exploiting this system to advance the maturation of Rubin systems.
Possible Talks:
1) Auxiliary Telescope Overview- atmospheric characterization and systems engineering pathbreaker, Stubbs (10 min)
2) Imaging Status and Results- Eli Rykoff (10 min)
3) Spectroscopic Status and Results - Eske Pedersen (10 min)
4) Image Quality Status and Results, and Shack-Hartmann Tests - Elana Urbach (10 min)
5) AuxTel Dome Illumination System - Parker Fagrelius (5 min)
6) Discussion.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) will support Rubin Observatory in its operations phase to carry out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. They will also provide support for scientific research with the data. During operations, NSF funding is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with NSF, and DOE funding is managed by SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), under contract by DOE. Rubin Observatory is operated by NSF's National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab) and SLAC.
NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
We are privileged to conduct research on Cerro Pachón in Chile, and acknowledge the Indigenous communities in Chile as the natural protectors of these lands.
