Session: Galaxies Science from Dwarfs to Clusters
Author: Aaron Romanowsky
Abstract: Recent deep imaging studies beyond the Local Group have revealed an expanding menagerie of dwarf galaxies, such ultra-diffuse galaxies, dwarfs with populous systems of globular clusters (GCs), and isolated, high-mass dwarfs that are inexplicably quenched. These are new elements of the "dwarf diversity" challenge to current models of galaxy formation, which also connects to the unfolding landscape from JWST of high-redshift galaxy formation dominated by massive star clusters. I will present example studies of dwarfs and GC systems using ground-based imaging out to 100 Mpc, including use of convolutional neural networks to gauge galaxy distances. I will then discuss the potential of Rubin, with synergies from Euclid and DESI, for opening up a transformative window on GCs and dwarfs in the nearby Universe.
