You have indicated that you will be traveling to Chile for a trip lasting less than 30 days. It will be treated much like any other business trip you may have taken for LSST. General information about traveling to Chile can also be found by clicking on the links on our travel pages.

The first step will be for you to create a Travel Request (TR).


Lodging

  • Lodging paid for by LSST will either be a hotel or a room in an LSST "property" booked by the LSST Chile administrative team.
  • If you don’t work for AURA, AURA will bill your organization for your stay.
  • You will need to sign a damage waiver, indicating that you are financially responsible for any damage caused, if you are staying in an LSST "property."

Transport

  • Round-trip flights will be booked by the travel coordinator (Erin Carlson).
  • Car rental covered if it is deemed necessary; for travel to the summit use of the shuttle is strongly encouraged.
  • Transportation from and to the airport will be arranged through the LSST Chile administrative team.

Additional info:

  • If you will be driving to the summit you are required to take the Litmos training module “Road safety on the summit.”

Per Diem


Medical

AURA Staff:

  • As with any other non-USA location, Cigna will remain your provider for medical coverage required during your trip.
  • The standard foreign travel accident and sickness policy from AIG will also apply for the duration of your trip.
  • Dental coverage will remain unchanged; if dental assistance is needed while in Chile it will be considered "out of network." You can file for reimbursement from the insurer.
  • In the event you are injured on the job, your state's workers' compensation coverage will apply.

Visa

  • A 90 day tourist visa will be issued to US Citizens upon arrival. Citizens of other countries should check their eligibility to enter Chile.

Office

  • Working space will be provided at the AURA recinto or at the summit as needed.
  • To connect to the internet you will need to register your MAC address with CISS. Prior to your arrival, complete the form on the CTIO page to request MAC address registration. 
  • To connect to the wifi in the LSST cafeteria (casino) connect to "pachonLSST" the password will be delivered upon arrival.
     

Financial support for Rubin Observatory comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Cooperative Support Agreement No. 1202910, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under Contract No. DE-AC02-76SF00515, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation. The NSF-funded Rubin Observatory Project Office for construction was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).  The DOE-funded effort to build the the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera (LSSTCam) is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC).
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
NSF and DOE will continue to support Rubin Observatory in its Operations phase. They will also provide support for scientific research with LSST data.
