General question, what data are in the repository for Stack Club? Are they real data or simulated data?
iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 02:02PM
thanks!
Will Clarkson Fri 2020-08-14 02:02PM
Does the real data (like DECam data) need to be uploaded to the science platform, or does the butler take it from public archives (like the NOIRlab archive)?
Imran Hasan Fri 2020-08-14 02:03PM
There is real data uploaded on the science platform already, that you can use the butler to interact with
Jeff Carlin Fri 2020-08-14 02:04PM
Yes, the science platform is run from the Rubin development cluster at NCSA, so you have access to many shared datasets that reside there from the RSP.
Alex Drlica-Wagner (he/him) Fri 2020-08-14 02:04PM
However, if you wanted to analyze a new DECam data set, you would need to orchestrate the download from NOIRLab and the pipeline processing
Alex Drlica-Wagner (he/him) Fri 2020-08-14 02:05PM
However, several DECam surveys have done this, so there is precedent (I'm thinking of HITS)
Will Clarkson Fri 2020-08-14 02:07PM
^^Thanks!!
Markus Rabus Fri 2020-08-14 02:07PM
@Will Clarkson , the Saha et al. data was already on the science platform. I have not checked if complete.
Will Clarkson Fri 2020-08-14 02:08PM
Thanks, @Markus Rabus - that's a nice dataset for prototyping and testing variability studies!
leanne Fri 2020-08-14 02:09PM
Eventually, you will be able to use the Web API aspect of the RSP to access data sets not at the USDF, or federate LSST data with data at other astronomical archives, but this is still a work in development.
Keith Bechtol Fri 2020-08-14 02:13PM
Wow, this surface brightness tutorial is awesome! :astonished:
Mariano Dominguez Fri 2020-08-14 02:15PM
Great tutorial, congrats! :star-struck:
Lee Kelvin Fri 2020-08-14 02:16PM
A lovely notebook @Nushkia Chamba and @A Emery Watkins !
A Emery Watkins Fri 2020-08-14 02:17PM
Wow, thanks everyone. Glad you think it will be useful!
A Emery Watkins Fri 2020-08-14 02:18PM
It will be available on Github, yes, for those who asked.
Nushkia Chamba Fri 2020-08-14 02:25PM
thank you so much everyone! The glowing Holoviews plot was something I did just over an hour before this session XD
leanne Fri 2020-08-14 02:29PM
Another excellent notebook

Great works! Does Vera C. Rubin observatory have a plan to provide a software or some sort of computing environment with all those useful packages?
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 02:31PM
Yes - and Greg and Alex just mentioned another Stack Club Course to come, for new participants to access the computing environment.
iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 02:32PM
Thanks!
Frossie Fri 2020-08-14 02:32PM
yes, there is a planned notebook interactive computing environment provided as part of the Science Platform. Early access to it can be provided as part of the Stack Club that Melissa describes anove
leanne Fri 2020-08-14 02:33PM
The Rubin Science Platform is that computing environment and has all these packages installed.
iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 02:33PM
Thanks!
Alex Drlica-Wagner (he/him) Fri 2020-08-14 02:37PM
I would go even a step farther to say that the Science Platform also provides an environment where you can install your own packages. For example, the surface brightness notebook used a combination of Rubin Obs. Stack tools and other astronomical tools (i.e. a python implementation of SourceExtractor).
iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 02:38PM
that is exactly what I wanted to know more. thanks!

iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 02:39PM
is this the place where I need to look at?
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 02:55PM
You'd want to join Stack Club first, some instructions are here: https://github.com/LSSTScienceCollaborations/StackClub (scroll down)
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 02:56PM
@Alex Drlica-Wagner (he/him) did the new Google form get linked in this GitHub page?
iyoon Fri 2020-08-14 03:01PM
Ah, thank you very much!
Matthew (he/his) Fri 2020-08-14 02:33PM
Sounds like a great program and it is already paying dividends. Well done.
