@Melissa Graham set the channel purpose: Social interaction time with Rubin 2020 PCW attendees. A soft start at 1pm Pacific with "pool time" conversation, and then the board games begin.

I see 14 people in this channel. Should we advertise it more broadly? How many of the people here plan to play on Wednesday?
parejkoj Tue 2020-08-11 06:53PM
I'll note that @Sophie Reed and I had a few good games of Hill 218 on BoardGameArena just a bit ago. Not the same as real, but we used slack for the bickering and making faces part, which is crucial.
Sophie Reed Tue 2020-08-11 06:54PM
I don't know if @Ian Sullivan (he/him) is in this channel, but I didn't lose all the games!
parejkoj Tue 2020-08-11 07:11PM
Tying the last one counts, I suppose.
parejkoj Tue 2020-08-11 07:11PM
I was rather proud of that second game, where I won after like 3 turns?
Sophie Reed Tue 2020-08-11 07:13PM
Shush.
Ian Sullivan (he/him) Fri 2020-08-14 03:45PM
I was sad to miss the games, but happy to be out backpacking.
Sophie Reed Fri 2020-08-14 05:03PM
I needed your moral support. Or strategy support. Or for you to distract John at crucial moments.

Sophie tells me I will be maybe hosting a breakout for anyone who wants to play the board game Scythe via Steam! For that you would need to, uh, have Scythe installed on Steam, and also have an Asmodee account. (The game isn't free but it's excellent.) I can teach how to play. There can be up to 5 players total including me. It is the only thing I use Steam for so don't worry I don't know what I'm doing either.
John Swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 11:13AM
I might be interested in this. I've tried playing physical-Scythe once, a few years ago, and don't really remember anything about the rules... but it is very pretty.
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 11:13AM
@U7K4WJ78A might also be interested.
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 03:14PM
That's the "Scythe: Digital Edition" version, not the "Tabletop Simulator" version, just to check?
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 03:14PM
Correct
K-T Lim Tue 2020-08-11 07:55PM
I'd kind of like to use this opportunity to learn new games that I haven't played before (which is almost all). But I'm also happy to set up a private tournament for a "classic" (e.g. Carcassone) on http://boardgamearena.com if anyone is interested. I would need usernames for participants.

I'd be up for people yelling bomb defusing instructions at me for "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes".
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 01:33PM
I like this idea but I don't think my officemate/spouse would appreciate it :joy:
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 01:33PM
yelling is not required...
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 01:34PM
uh huh
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 01:34PM
How about we skip the instructions and I just yell at you?
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 01:34PM
Well, that'll happen anyway.
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 01:34PM
that might be pushing the accepted definition of board game
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 01:35PM
How about if I have a board game in front of me at the time?
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 01:35PM
Well, it's not that different from any other game we'll be playing these days (online and interactive)
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 01:36PM
@mrawls Or were you just referring to the yelling?
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 01:36PM
skipping the instructions and just having Sophie yell at John doesn't quite seem like a board game is all. You should come play Scythe with me instead.
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 01:37PM
How about the game is, "how inventive can I get in my insults while avoiding swear words?"
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 01:37PM
FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 01:38PM
But I would love to come and play Scythe with you at some point, for today though I think I might be faffing with other stuff.
ksk Wed 2020-08-12 03:06PM
We have the PSVR version and it's pretty fun.

K-T Lim Wed 2020-08-12 01:33PM
No. But this channel appears in the LSSTC Slack.
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 01:33PM
not quite that magical, but you can add this channel in that Slack in ... yeah what K-T said
Merlin Wed 2020-08-12 01:33PM
Ahhh, interesting, thanks!
Merlin Wed 2020-08-12 01:34PM
I've only seen this done once before, and it was quite quickly undone (I forget why though) so I've never experienced it before.
Mike Lund Wed 2020-08-12 03:04PM
So where did things land on what needs to be set up for board games?
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 03:08PM
No where yet but I'm about to do something. Probably.
Mike Lund Wed 2020-08-12 03:10PM
Alright, just wasn't sure if I need to be getting things installed or signed up with or the like. Like signing up with the boardgamearena site (which I wasn't before)
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 03:15PM
No worries, I'd been dithering about whether or not to post anything all morning.
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 03:11PM
As we are gaining more interest in this I am going to stick with my statement that a vague plan would be good. So I'm going to stick some options in a list below. If you have another option that you would like added please let me know.

I want to play Scythe with mrawls because she is awesome. (You need to install it from steam and get an Asmodee account.) I want to play one of the board games arena options, you need to sign up for a board games arena account. Either free or premium. I want to play online dominion over the free website. https://dominion.games/ , need to sign up. I want to play something else on steam/tabletop simulator. You need to find friends and install what you need. Put suggestions below. I hate games, why am in this room?
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 03:17PM
If you choose option 1 this is the game you need (sorry it's not free but it's cheaper than the physical board game?) https://store.steampowered.com/app/718560/Scythe_Digital_Edition/ and I have room for 5 total players, novices very welcome. We'll use https://washington.zoom.us/my/mrawls at... let's say 1:15pm 1:30pm Pacific, I haven't eaten lunch yet
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 03:22PM
Comment here with your Asmodee username to reserve a spot at the virtual table
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 03:24PM
Can I ... provisionally reserve a spot? I'd like to join, but I won't be ready by 13:15 (as well as lunch, for tedious reasons I can't actually start downloading Scythe until after 13:00). If you have enough for a game before I'm ready, please don't wait for me.
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 03:33PM
We could to 13:30 if you'd prefer, my afternoon is more open than usual thanks to PCW
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 03:37PM
Given that game download time is nonzero I think I'll officially make it 13:30
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 03:38PM
I might still be late to that, but I'll do my best. :slightly_smiling_face: Probably also worth trying to recruit more people online when the session starts - I think the blurb said 30+ minutes of "casual conversation"_before the games start.
Mike Lund Wed 2020-08-12 04:01PM
I'd like to claim a spot on this, I need to get it installed and sign up, but it's purchased (turns out it'd been on my steam wishlist since 2018)

Asmodee account: Lowbacca1977
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 04:31PM
My account is jdswinbank
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 04:31PM
I believe I got stuff installed... but need lunch!
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:34PM
I'm in the Zoom now and will start once we appear to have a critical mass, no rush
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:35PM
Oh sorry I mean I'm in the boardgames zoom now not my personal one, will switch when we have enough critical mass to actually start @Mike Lund
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:40PM
once you have the game installed, go ahead and launch it and choose "play online" so I see you in the player lobby and can invite you to the private game I'm creating (my username is merrdiff)
Mike Lund Wed 2020-08-12 04:45PM
Are we waiting a few minutes more? I may go finish the tutorials if we've got a few more mintues and that doesn't mess up the inviting
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:51PM
We're actually using a breakout room in the main boardgames zoom room!
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 04:43PM
We're currently on https://princeton.zoom.us/my/rhltg?pwd=RXo5aFVOaFdZY0J5eVN1a0FtZUtXdz09 and will aim to drift into games at the end of the hour.
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:45PM
I have a hard stop at 3 so I'd like to kick Scythe off sooner rather than later
mrawls Wed 2020-08-12 04:45PM
So far John S and Mike L are planning to play, anyone else?
parejkoj Wed 2020-08-12 06:15PM
Great, I just got an email from BoardGameArena reminding me of how badly I'd lost.
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 07:07PM
Me too
Yusra AlSayyad Wed 2020-08-12 06:32PM
Game of dominion about to start now
Sophie Reed Wed 2020-08-12 08:56PM
Thank you to everyone who joined us for chatting and/or games. It was good to see people. If people want to play more games over the next few days then use this channel to coordinate.
swinbank Wed 2020-08-12 10:49PM
I enjoyed playing Scythe (thanks @mrawls for organising!), even if I only understood about half of what was happening. I'd be keen to try again sometime - after I've worked through the tutorial - if anybody was interested.
K-T Lim Fri 2020-08-14 03:13PM
We didn't get a slide in? :disappointed:
Sophie Reed Fri 2020-08-14 03:28PM
No one asked me, maybe I should have volunteered one?
Mike Lund Fri 2020-08-14 03:32PM
I should've taken notes on Scythe then
Sophie Reed Fri 2020-08-14 03:35PM
Maybe I should have made a plot of victory points vs time for various games, put it on a slide and then talked about it ambiguously. I wonder how long before someone noticed.
Mike Lund Fri 2020-08-14 03:37PM
These are going pretty fast, so.... I think it could get by
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 04:40PM
I'm so sorry I just realized I forgot to add board games to the Breakout Summaries :disappointed: really sorry
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 04:41PM
I was unable to join on Wed but that night I did read through this Slack to see how things went - it seems that what you tried did work pretty well?
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 04:44PM
If you have any feedback about how this went, from your perspective, please send to me or via the Feedback Survey?

(Note that we made the Feedback Survey a few weeks ago, and so there's a question about whether people would like to see social sessions (happy hour, board games) in future virtual meetings.)
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 04:44PM
Thanks @Sophie Reed for organizing board games!
K-T Lim Fri 2020-08-14 04:49PM
It went well, I think: a dozen or so participants for social chat, one game of Scythe, one game of Libertalia, two games of Dominion (the first unfortunately interrupted close to the end), one splash in a lake instead of a pool.
Melissa Graham Fri 2020-08-14 04:58PM
For the record I think a Board Games slide would have been great! At the face-to-face there's usually one for this and soccer, if I remember right.
