Inspiring Future Astro-Engineers in Chile

Inspiring Future Astro-Engineers in Chile

December 11, 2015 - LSST Optics Engineer Constanza Araujo attended the III Astro-Engineering Workshop in Santiago in November and gave a talk on the LSST Optical System.  To promote engineering disciplines that are needed in the new and current observatories in Chile, her presentation included a brief description of the work of an optical engineer in a telescope project while in construction phase.

While at the workshop, Constanza talked with two students from the Lieco 1 High School who were presenting their work on building a radio telescope.  The students were interested to learn about Constanza’s career path; she was one of only two women presenting at the Astro-Engineering workshop.

Constanza’s work with LSST appeared in one of Chile’s national newspapers “Las Ultimas Noticias” where she is on the cover of the Women’s insert in the paper.  Promoting STEM careers is an important part of AURA’s mission in Chile and LSST is proud to have Constanza contributing her technical knowledge to LSST construction and inspiring others to follow in her path!

Financial support for Rubin Observatory comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through Cooperative Support Agreement No. 1202910, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science under Contract No. DE-AC02-76SF00515, and private funding raised by the LSST Corporation. The NSF-funded Rubin Observatory Project Office for construction was established as an operating center under management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).  The DOE-funded effort to build the the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera (LSSTCam) is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC).
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science. NSF supports basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
NSF and DOE will continue to support Rubin Observatory in its Operations phase. They will also provide support for scientific research with LSST data.
